Gaining Insight into Ritual Transformations of Consciousness

From May 15th to 17th, the Yale Institute of Sacred Music hosted their second annual conference on the Black Sacred Arts. Titled “Ritual Transformations of Consciousness,” this enlightening event took place at the Greenberg Conference Center and drew together a vibrant group of practitioners and scholars from various disciplines and religious backgrounds.

Participants were treated to an array of captivating experiences, including performances by the Mojuba Dance Collective and the Iamou Lele Dance and Drum Ensemble.

The conference featured prestige presenters such as Clare Byrne, a talented candidate pursuing her master’s degree in religion and music at Yale University. Byrne delved into the intricate relationship between music and movement in the Black Church. Another esteemed presenter, Deborah Kapchan, captivated the audience with her vast knowledge as a professor of performance studies at New York University and acclaimed author of five books and numerous essays exploring sound, narrative, and poetics.
