Exploring the intersection of Black sacred arts and ecology

Thursday, May 30, 2024

From May 13-15, artists and scholars of sacred music gathered at the Greenberg Conference Center for the 2024 Yale Institute of Sacred Music Black Sacred Arts Conference. This year’s conference focused on exploring the connections between Black sacred arts, ecology, and environmental concerns.

Attendees exchanged ideas through poster presentations, general sessions, and breakout groups. They presented research not only through traditional written media but also through alternative formats that incorporated interactive engagement with artistic and ritual phenomena. These included lecture-demonstrations, sonic activations, and listening and viewing sessions. One highlight of the event was an outdoor performance titled ‘Mudfish: An Ecological Sonic Ritual,’ in which attendees were encouraged to participate.

The conference provided a unique platform for exploring the rich interplay between Black sacred arts and ecological themes, fostering meaningful dialogue and creative expression.
